As the weekend approaches I rewind back in my mind to a gem I discovered last weekend thanks to fellow Champ, Rodney. If you’ve ever rolled through Station North, one of Baltimore’s art districts centered near MICA and University of Baltimore, then you’ve probably rolled right pass The Crown. Still sporting the shell of what appears to have once been an old Korean travel agency, The Crown is now a spot for peeps to enjoy tasty food dishes, beers and bass. The low-key gem operates as a restaurant/ live show venue/ good ole fashion dive bar.
Last Friday night, I walked up to the abandoned looking building dressed in a blue awning with Korean wording and spotted a small sign reading “The Crown”. Immediately, I was wooed. Once I stepped inside I could’ve would’ve thought I was in the wrong building if it hadn’t been for the deep bass I could hear coming from upstairs. I ventured up the stairs to see a hand-painted sign – The Crown …Red Room… Blue Room. After peeping into the Blue Room and finding a chill room with tables, dining guests and some tunes that didn’t consist of the bass that led me upstairs I slid over to the Red Room.
Upon pushing open the Red Room door I felt the bass come over me and my eyes were welcomed with one of the grungiest, most glorious bars I’ve come across in recent years. Filled with a fully stocked bar, suspect leather couches and a dancing crowd, the Red Room was everything I’d been searching for in Baltimore. Reminding me of some of my most favorite party spots i.e. MJQ and El Bar in ATL, the lights were dimmed super low and there were black lights lit throughout the spacious room. As a bonus, there was a live performance from local duo, Bond St. District and they were equally rocking a crowd of what appeared to be followers and first timers.
I could go on and on about my new found gem but instead I’ll put it like this: If you dread getting dressed in your weekend’s best just to go stand around with your friends at some over priced bar then you’ve finally found the place for you. The Crown is everything but that. Come as you are (no, those sneakers aren’t ok…they’re perfect) have 3 Natty Bohs for under 10 bucks and dance the night away with new friends. And while you’re at it, sneak over to the Blue Room and try a dish from the surprisingly awesome menu. Be sure to report back on your thoughts!
