Sweetlife Festival kicked off yesterday with major headliners from all genres of music.
WithKendrick Lamar as headliner, the festival had a number of performances from rock legend Billy Idol to pop-star Tove Lo.
Almost every headliner took time to bring awareness of the unbearable heat. Yet while artists sweat through their clothes, dripped water and wiped their foreheads, it didn’t stop them from running around on stage with incredible liveliness. Plus did I mention people had a great time running through the Merriweather Post Pavilion grubbing and playing games? Also, if you were in tune with what was happening throughout the day you might or might not have noticed that you’d catch the creators (Nathaniel Ru, Jonathan Neman, and Nicolas Jammet) of Sweet Green rolling around the festival as concert go’ers enjoying the show with everyone else.
Upon walking into Merriweather Post Pavilion at noon DC-native Lightshow took the stage with his crew. The artist brought his well-known remix of Trap Queen by Fetty Wap. His energy foreshadowed only more positive energy for the rest of the day.
Indie pop band Misterwives took the main stage by storm and talked about conformity to societal norms. Lead singer Mandy Lee even found herself doing push-ups in the middle of her performance and speaking into the microphone when she touched the ground.
24-year-old SZA came on stage a few minutes late, as all artists did when performing on the mainstage. Although she performed a short set, the singer danced from side-to-side, body rolling on stage, sporting her beautiful red hair. She also made sure to put on a performance the crowd would never forget. Leaving her to have to pause during the show to use her asthma pump – now that’s dope.
In a time when electronic dance music leads the top charts, Allen Stone brought awareness to the audience when he rocked on stage stating, “You don’t see no laptops up here.” He even jumped into the mosh pit during his performance giving fans opportunity to party with him during his performance. Allen even stopped for a quick second to take a selfie with a fan. Also, a must mention would definitely be Allen Stone’s keyboardist; that guy would go nuts every time they started a new song. You could find him spinning in circles with his stool on top of his head and going looney.
Sinkane also made sure to rock the crowd at the Tree House stage with his unique sound and dope band. He made sure they performed many of his hits off of his album ‘Mean Love’. If you’re not hipped to this guy, please take this as a notification to do so very soon.
The Bleachers set was full of theatrics and down right musical genius. They played a lot of their original song that their crowd loves and even made time for an ‘Only One’ by Kanye West cover. The also made sure to perform their smash hit ‘I Wanna Get Better‘. This set up the stage perfectly for Billy Idol and his boys.
Shortly after, the super ripped Billy Idol took the stage with his crew and rocked the house. He put on a wild and crazy show like any good rockstar would, including the 60-year-old throwing his abs around in public. His guitarist was also pretty amazing; he used like 5 guitars throughout the whole set. They also made sure to rock the building with their hit tune ‘White Wedding‘. Idol’s positivity and high-energy attitude made his show def worth the watch.
After performing at Z107.3 a few days ago, Tove Lo brought both new and popular songs. Stripping herself from her front-tied flannel, she touched herself while singing “Talking Body.” Pulling down her straps, she flashed the crowd her nipples at the climax of the song.
Last, but not least, rapper Kendrick Lamar blessed the crowd with his lyrics. While his set included mostly tracks from Section.80 and Good Kid Maad City. “Alright” was the only song he performed from his latest album, “To Pimp a Butterfly”. He also freestyled about feeling thrilled to perform not just at the festival, but also in general. Lamar’s overall show was amazing, putting you in a time and place of a true west coast kid in Compton, LA with his visuals and performance delivery. He also made sure to show mad love to fans as well and called up one of Sweet Green’s co-founders, Jonathan Neman, to the stage to help him rap his insane verses from “m.A.A.d. city”. Quickly, Lamar dismisses Jonathan and pulls a girl out of the crowd rocking cat ears and she crushed the entire song, making the crowd go wild!
For those who aren’t familiar, Kendrick went MIA pre-album release. His concert appearance marks one of the few he’s made, and certainly the first to kick-off the summer. S/O to BFA for some of the amazing photos.
