4. Space Cadet – Flume ft. Ghostface Killah and Autre
In this trippy space-based concert – there isn’t much you can do but vibe with the music and be dazzled by the visuals. The bright array of colors and Adult Swim-esque characters are childlike until Ghostface’s character begins to skyrocket from atop a pyramid and….let me not spoil the video for you. It’s great. The animation company that created this video is none other than Forest City Rockers who also have a pretty nice web series that you probably should check out. They were also key in creating Nickelodeon’s Sanjay and Craig and the infamous Bob’s Burgers.
3. Carmen – Stromae
If you haven’t heard of Stromae – you have now and you’d better get familiar. He’s a growing French artist who was recently interviewed in VIBE Magazine and is taking the world by storm. Even if you can’t understand French, it’s not impossible to grasp the concepts that he conveys – especially in “Carmen” where he expresses his distaste for social media culture and the disconnect that it creates between normal human beings. With images of Obama and Queen Elizabeth, he shows how public figures help to further this notion of fickle love, desire, and ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ that seeps into lives through these devices/programs. A warning, obviously, as he has his own IG and Twitter accounts, to the dangers of overconsumption.
2. Le Peuple De l’Herbe – Yini Bo
This video melds a pointed graphic style with photo-imagery and reflections in an extremely creative and hilarious way that is truly innovative. Simply watching this group’s videos encourages one to want to learn French just to be able to listen to them more.
1. The Force – TOKiMONSTA ft. Kool Keith
This video is psychedelic – but not in a bad way. TOKiMONSTA’s well known for her weaving of deep synth beats and electronic waves into enjoyable audio tracks all on their own, earning her brand as a Trap/EDM DJ and contributing to her snagging the number one spot. This video by the eccentric Teppei Maki mirrors her mesmerizing mixes in a non-intrusive, but captivating fashion.
