When you think of Nike, you think of all categories in sports, but recently the heavy hitter announced that they will be officially cutting the snow division for good this up and coming 2014 holiday season. Nike SB will now focus solely on skateboarding for the upcoming year. This sounds crazy and is definitely a shock to the sporting world but has been something on Nike’s mind for a while now.
“Nike SB will focus its innovation, design and marketing resources on its biggest brand driver and growth opportunity, skateboarding,” Nike spokeswoman Jenna Golden told XGames.com. “The current Holiday ’14 Nike Snowboarding collection will be the final at retail.”
Fortunately, Nike will be honoring all of the contracts they have with their current snow athletes. A lot of criticism has been floating about the Power house pulling this type of move by releasing snow sports from their Nike SB collection. Apparently the company has seen growth in every area except action sports. Some people think this is a risky move due to the fact that even though skateboarding is one of the most popular trends, trends always fade away. 20 year Pro skateboarder turned business entrepreneur Rob Dyrdek Launched Street league skateboarding back in 2010 with some of the best riders in the world. Since then, SLS has made big moves by signing a deal with FOX SPORTS 1. So clearly there is a huge market for skateboarding within the sports world.
“I’m thrilled to bring Street League to FOX Sports,” says Dyrdek. “Not only am I a fan of what they are doing with other key properties on the FOX Sports 1 network, but to have a media partner that truly believes in skateboarding as a stand-alone sport poised for long-term growth means the world to our business and the ability to grow the Street League audience globally.”
In the past Rob stated that he wont stop pushing until skateboarding is an Olympic sport. As you can see it s already well on it’s way. I’ll definitely be sure to follow the sport to see it through to that point as well.
