Sherif Mattar is easily becoming one of the most well known and versed rappers in the District and it comes with a great cost of responsibility to continue to carry the torch for the DMV. If you’re not familiar with his music I suggest you check out his SoundCloud or even get your lazy ass up off the couch and catch one of his shows at The Bohemian Caverns at a U. St open mic. The first time I encountered the emcee he rocked the crowd and his lyricism was duly noted.
After making some much-anticipated noise with his single Grammy, he’s showcasing his evolution as an artist with his new track Champagne which is still in the theme of celebrating victory but on another level. As always it’s definitely refreshing to come across an artist that can pick great instrumentals and lace it with heartfelt lyrics. Don’t believe me, check out what our Music Contributor Vance had to say below.
“You know what’s comes best with being a champion? Some “Champagne.” No, we’re not talking about that sparkling alcoholic beverage that usually given following an epic victory, even though that is both accepted and expected. We’re talking about Sherif Mattar’s new track with the same name. Armed by a Halsey-sampled beat whipped up by Steven Padilla, “Champagne” is a banger with hard-hitting flows to follow such finesse instrumentation. Mattar succeeds in staying fluid through multiple verses, it’s his lyrics that really shows the Virginia artists true hunger.” —Vance Brinkley
“We gonna keep grinding every to we straight, mothaf*cka. From the East Coast, VA, mothaf*cka. Sherif Mattar, Imma kill em with the bars until they beam me up to the pearly gates………..[you guessed it] mothaf*cka.
