This new song by Selam is beautiful it goes back into the mode of storytelling while singing which is definitely a lost art in music these days. In conceptualizing the music video, singer,talked about her Ethiopian heritage and the notion of magical realism within the contexts of African culture. The video was directed by the talented, Tiana Marenah, providing a visual that can not be duplicated.
The goal was to tie in the romantic themes in her music while simultaneously acknowledging the jungle-backdrop of Singapore. They used the surroundings to enhance the themes of emotion and color of the track. The piece is about the journey of a strong female artist, at odds with maintaining a flawed relationship and pursuing her career. Overall this should be something many young men and women think about. So often we find ourselves in relationships that just don’t work at all. Most of the time instead of leaving we rather dwell in them but take the lesson from Selam and take time to self discover yourself and find out if you need to take that leap towards your dreams over maintaining a flawed relationship.
