Now that #OscarsSoWhite is over (congrats Leo, it’s about time)…
You might be thinking a bit about some of the non-white artists in the music industry. A personal favorite that keeps it real with Korean culture, yet established American roots is my homie CL.
Have you seen her? She’s collaborated with Diplo, Riff Raff, Skrillex and more throughout the past several years.
Not familiar with K-Pop culture? Well if you watched “Daddy” by PSY (the recent post-Gangnam Style craze), then we dare you to spot this talented beauty singing and dancing in part of the video.
This Asian rapper did not just pop out of nowhere. She started spitting lyrics in 2NE1, a famous girl band in Korea. When they broke apart, CL found herself breaking out into the spotlight as a solo rap artist. Not to mention she worked with (and looks like she’s besties with) Fashion Designer Jeremy Scott. He even brought her as his plus one to the 2015 VMAs.
Why does she fit into music today? She not only appeals with amazing beats paired with dirty lyrics, but she also teams with the best of fashion in a not-so-contemporary way. By that, I mean she isn’t Ariana Grande sporting the latest TopShop or Taylor Swift adorning a Chanel dress. CL chooses the boldest outfits at times to define herself from the typical society good-girl appeal.
Notably, she held a post-New York Fashion Week backstage dance party including appearances from Joey Bada$$ and Taylor Hill.
