This week alone has been a whirlwind of emotions considering three of my favorite rappers (Rapsody, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar) are nominated for the 2018 Best Rap Album Grammy and the New Jersey native, Kyrie Irving is balling out of control in Boston right now. Even with all of this going on one thing that I keep coming back to is playing music by Houston, TX native Jevon Doe. As of lately, the track that’s in heavy rotation for me right now is Name which features Tobi Lou.
I love this track specifically because not only does it carry a sample from Just Friends by Musiq Soulchild and Doe makes it completely his own. Its almost like he went into a time machine picked up the original track produced by Ivan “Orthodox” Barias and Carvin “Ransum” Haggins and brought it back to present day with a refreshed dirty south 808 vibe. Tobi Lou manages to lace the track with a few bars talking to a girl about possibly linking up to hang out and chill. Beyond the fact that this track is definitely hella dope I can’t wait to see them perform this in a huge venue with those 808’s knocking. Keep it up champs what you all are building is incredible.
Also, be sure to check out Doe’s latest project My Life Changed Pt. 1.
