Los Angeles group KING recently released the second single off of their critically acclaimed debut album We Are King, titled Carry On. With not much to their musical resume before this release, the trio has already seemed generate quite a buzz for themselves. With the 2011 independent release of The Story EP the trio (composed of Twin sisters Paris and Amber Strother and musical sister Anita Bias) would receive cosigns from the likes of Prince, Erykah Badu, Quest Love, and jazz pianist Robert Glasper. After 5 years of patiently waiting fans were finally given what they have been craving for, a full-length project. Released in February on their independent label, KING Creative, the 12-song album would quietly make major moves by appearing 6 times on the Billboard charts for 1st week sales including: #1 on the Heatseekers Chart, #7 for Independent Albums, #8 for R&B, #20 for Top Hip-Hop/R&B, #78 for Top Album Sales, and #158 in the Top 200.
With all of the success of the album and packing out every show so far on their North American tour, the trio is still able to crank out visuals. For this visual in particular, KING takes a similar approach making animation a major key as they did for their first single The Greatest, which was an 8-bit “all things Nintendo inspired” video paying tribute to Muhammad Ali. This go around they get a hand from Berlin-based illustrator Veronica Solomon in creating this great work of art. While speaking to Billboard, Paris had this to say about the creative process behind the video:
“We found some of Veronica’s work on the Internet and reached out. It was fun to see how she interpreted the music. It’s important to us to be able to have no boundaries on what we’re able to present visually.” —KING
Carry On serves as a melodic tune guiding one on how to love someone the right way. The soothing voices of KING along with the dreamy animations of Veronica Solomon puts one in a trance-like state like none other. Words can’t express how personally excited I was when I saw that they decided to release a video for my favorite song on the album. Just another excuse for me to play the song on repeat. KING is definitely ahead of their time with their experimental R&B, already working with the likes of Corinne Bailey Rae, twins Amber and Paris help co-write the Soul singer’s latest single Green Aphrodisiac. KING continues to keep things moving with their tour heading to SXSW for a run of shows then they’re headed overseas for the duration of the tour closing out in Japan on May 4th.
