Chicago singer BJ The Chicago Kid is back with the latest visual off of his debut album In My Mind. Titled New Cupid, this single talks about the death of the cute naked baby we once knew as Cupid and how the new modern-day club hopping, chain smoking Cupid is taking over and ruining love one relationship at a time. Cast for the role of disgruntled Cupid is actor/comedian, Hannibal Buress. In the video, Buress sets his eyes on suburbia as his playground for stomping on hearts and dismantling true romance.
Once known for bringing people together with the strike of an arrow, new Cupid seeks to tear people apart with money, social media, and jealousy which is painted throughout the video in various scenes with some familiar faces like IAMSU and Mila J. Former Tony! Toni! Toné Frontman Raphael Saadiq even makes a brief appearance as a member of BJ’s garageband. Grammy award winner and longtime friend Kendrick Lamar has the pleasure of blessing us with a verse as well as appearing in the video reciting his lyrics to BJ that paints the picture of a man down on his luck and heartbroken.
“Working on this video was a dream come true, from Hannibal agreeing to play the new Cupid, to Raphael [Saadiq, of Tony! Toni! Toné!] providing the music, IAMSU lending us his acting skills and Mila J stopping through to lend us her smile and beauty,” BJ tells Rolling Stone. “I have to say I have a great group of friends. Even Kendrick [Lamar] paused everything he had going around the Grammys to make sure we had what we needed.”
Hoping to spread more love throughout the radio waves seems to be one of BJ’s main goals with his music. This is the third single off of BJ The Chicago Kid’s critically-acclaimed album and he hasn’t missed a beat. There are a few other artists as well including DC’s own Raheem Devaughn that help spread love and hope to prove that real love isn’t dead, it just needs resurgence. I really like the direction BJ The Chicago Kid is headed. By any means, he isn’t a rookie in the industry already working with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock, Freddie Gibbs, Big K.R.I.T., and even Kanye West. It’s great to see him finally step into the light and get the recognition that he deserves. If you haven’t already please make sure to check out his Motown debut album and continue to support real music champs!
