When approaching the Fillmore on Wednesday night it was incredible to see how much love and supportMonica continues to garner in her wonderful career. This was highly noted when seeing the line wrap around the building of the Fillmore Silver Spring as fans anxiously awaited their turn to get into the venue. As fans approached the door you could hear sounds blaring out of the front door as the Atlanta trio, XSO took the stage to perform some of their song Why Not and It’s Whatever. It was cool to see them perform as they made sure to keep the crowd entertained as well as their DJ who constantly yelled “What up DETROIT!!!!” as fans stared back in disbelief that he did not realize he was in Silver Spring, MD. That part was actually kind of funny as the show progressed eventually he got it right and started saying “What up DC, What up Silver Spring, What DMV!!!” At this point, I don’t think the crowd cared anymore as to whether or not he knew where he was haha.
Shortly, after XSO wrapped up the R&B unsung hero himselfRico Love approached the stage to perform many of the tracks off of his album TTLO. He managed to perform many of his popular tracks including Somebody Else, TTLO, and They Don’t Know. His set was pretty lit until people got a little too wild and the show stopped for a brief moment as Rico tried to figure out what was going on. He later gets on the mic and says, “He whipped it out and just started pissing in the crowd….whatttttt,” instantly the crowd erupted in laughter as he continued to wrap up his set and get the crowd warmed up for Monica. Once he finished up he exited the stage as DJ Mars got the crowd hyped for Monica’s appearance as he played classic Go-Go tracks like Overnight Scenario by Rare Essence, Da’ Butt by E.U., Chuck Baby by Chuck Brown, Pretty Girls by Wale featuring Weensey Of Backyard Band, etc.
As soon as everyone was in a good mood he introduces Monica and she came out and wasted no time getting into her most notable tracks, Don’t Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days), Why I Love You So Much, and Before You Walk Out Of My Life. After wrapping up a few of her classic tracks she quickly thank the crowd and mentioned that it was amazing that she was able to perform those songs 20 years later and her fans still vibe with them. Almost instantly you found yourself falling in love with her catalog all over again and remember why you were a fan in the first place.
She also made sure to pivot into another classic The Boy Is Mine featuring Brandy, which was an amazing experience as you could hear everyone in the crowd reciting the lyrics to this track. As the show went on she continue to pile on the hits with So Gone, U Should’ve Known Better, Still Standing, For You I Will and Everything To Me. Once she got that out of the way she went on to continue her Code Red experience and got into a new track from her upcoming album she performed with the help of Timbaland being projected onto a screen on stage. This was pretty dope to see as Timbaland went through his usual beat-boxing scat session while Monica poured her heart out with every lyric she began to sing.
One of the things that were awesome about this show was she managed to give her backup singers some time to shine and show off their gift for singing. They both had time to sing while signing songs that only great singers could pull off. Monica also made sure to constantly showcase her ongoing love and passion for her husband Shannon Brown as she displayed photos of their wedding while performing throughout the show and also making it known that her HUSBAND was her HUSBAND and nobody else’s. That was pretty cool to hear from an R&B artist while they were performing live and that gave her major points in my arena.
Overall, the show was entertaining and full of life and Monica made sure that every one of her fans felt loved, touched, and appreciated as she blessed everyone with her presence, gift, and love.
