In 2015, Mick Jenkins‘Wave[s] EP was a display of his development in sound and his artistry. From much lighter production, improved songwriting, to even testing out his vocals, Mick accomplished the feat of taking his abilities as an artist to another level. This year, Mick Jenkins has released a few loose tracks to hold over as he works on his anticipated debut album The Healing Component, and today’s release is just another impressive drop from the Chicago native. Some artists have the luxury of connecting with certain producers that push them further with their sound, and for Mick Jenkins and Kaytranada, they can’t seem to miss with their collaborations. If you’re a fan or just coming across Mick for the first time, “The Artful Dodger” is far from a sleeper.
The track, produced by Kaytranada and THEMpeople, comes with a feel/tempo that 90’s Busta Rhymes would completely shatter if he had the chance. But the beauty of a song like this is it gives nothing but room for Mick Jenkins’ lyrical skills to shine bright. He easily floats all over the track with bars that you’ll have to rewind a couple times to catch, and who could be mad at that? Wait, that rhymed. Ha! Anyway, don’t be a fool — press play above and prepare to have your head nodding for the next three minutes. Trust me, it’s going to happen. Enjoy!
