Monday night was absolutely one for the books. The line to enter the Fillmore in Silver Spring, Maryland was wrapped around the corner further than the eye could see. A crowd mostly made up of high school and college-aged fans, waited eagerly to party with 21 year old rapper, Lil Uzi Vert. The doors opened at 7pm but the concert did not kick off until 8:15. Little did fans know that there would be special guest appearances from A$AP Ant aka YG Addie and D.C’s own, Fat Trel.
The first rapper to step on stage was Atlanta’s Kap G. He is well known for his role as Fidel, in last years popular film Dope. Relatively new to the D.C, Maryland, Virginia (DMV) crowd, Kap G left a lasting impression at the venue with his hit song, “Girlfriend”. Of course Kap G couldn’t leave the stage without capturing the DMV crowd on Snapchat. If he didn’t get it on Snapchat it didn’t happen, right?
21 Savage, another rapper from Atlanta and 2016 XXL Freshman, stepped on stage after 30 plus minutes of no entertainment. He openly expressed his frustrations with the venue stating, “Y’all got a lame ass venue”, and started a, “f—k this venue” chant and a, “f—k Donald Trump” chant. He also mentioned that he had Shy Glizzy outside ready to perform but the Fillmore would not let him in. 21 Savage rapped his 5th track on his Free Guwop EP, “Red Opps” and the venue erupted. Overall I think 21 Savage had a poor stage presence and was neither animated nor enthusiastic to be there. “21 Savage for President. 21 21 21”.
The third and final artist to perform before Lil Uzi Vert was YFN Lucci, who is from Atlanta like the previous two acts. Unlike 21 Savage, Lucci had a great stage presence and sound. He was very interactive and had many fans in attendance. YFN Lucci performed hits like “I Wonder” and “Key to the Streets”. Both of these songs had the entire venue jumping. “DC, are you ready to see Lil Uzi Vert? We’re gonna party tonight”!
At about 10:40pm Lil Uzi Vert hops on stage in a VLove white hoody with his hood up. Green and yellow strobe lights circumnavigated throughout the Fillmore in unison. Uzi began rapping the lyrics to, “Canadian Goose”, and each fan went crazy! Swinging his arms, bouncing his dreads, and hitting his trademark “shimmy”, Lil Uzi mesmerized the young crowd with popular hits like “Super Sayan”, “All My Chains”, and “Money Longer”. When “All My Chains” was performed, pink, blue, and white strobe lights dashed around the stage. Hip Hop’s youngest rock star had conquered the Fillmore. Uzi barely had to rap throughout his entire set because the DMV crowd knew every single word. “Uh oh, you know what the blue lights mean. We gotta keep it cold in here. Sing along if you know this sh-t”. The 21 year old Philadelphia native roared his new record, “Subzero” as the blue strobe lights transformed green. I was very surprised that his live voice sounded identical to his CD quality voice. Continuing to bombard fans with hits, Uzi performed “Top”, “You Was Right”, “7am” and “P’s and Q’s”. Fans requested he perform “Grab the Wheel”, because of his tribute line, “When I’m in D.C they call me Moe”. Just when we all thought the concert couldn’t get any better, Lil Uzi sprays champagne into the crowd multiple times. Wearing a Free Kodak shirt, Uzi performed “No Flocking” and “Skrilla” as a tribute to his locked-up XXL Freshman tour mate. Uzi ended the concert running through the VIP balcony seats and performing “Money Longer” for a second time.
Lil Uzi Vert showed the D.C area a lot of love and energy. Sharing tracks from Love is Rage and his most recent tape, Lil Uzi Vert vs. The World, he had enough material to keep the show going for another hour. He is a natural entertainer with a magnetic stage presence. I fear that a lot of “new wave” artists do not have longevity, but I am confident in Lil Uzi Vert and his sound. Not only is it unique, it’s catchy and charismatic. His distinct purple dreads also add to his brand image. The socialites in the crowd asked Uzi about his relationship and where his girlfriend (rumored ex girlfriend) Brittany was. Uzi assured fans that she was at home sleeping and reminded us that she turned him into a “slut”. Amongst other news involving Lil Uzi Vert, he has a new track titled, “Too Much Sauce”, with rapper Future, which debuted on DJ Esco’s, Project E.T. Be on the look out for new music featuring the leader of the XXL Freshman list. Lil Uzi Vert is also performing at Trillectro Festival in Columbia, Maryland, August 27th, with Rae Sremmurd and headliner Kid Cudi.
