The evolving music scene in Baltimore has the potential to become a prominent destination for record labels in search of fresh talent. From the veterans to the newbies of the overlooked city, the talent pool stretches to a wide margin in various genres. While the spotlight currently shines on the up-and-comers of Baltimore Hip-Hop (Tate Kobang, Young Moose, etc.), Ellis, 32, stands strong in today’s era with a vintage sound. A true student of the game, Ellis’ progress since his 2011 debut release Bluray E. has led the way to many successes, including an appearance on the popular “Sway In The Morning” radio show in 2013. It’s been two years since his standout album, The Education of Ellis, and with a flurry of music coming left and right, the follow-up, Ocean Grown, picks up from where his previous body of work left off.
The 14-track LP attests to his desire of being a better songwriter rather than garnering the label of a lyrical MC. Sure, it can be a struggle for rappers with lyrical abilities like Ellis to transition into a primarily songwriting, but he accomplishes the feat from beginning to end. He’s developing into an artist with his latest effort, which may arguably be the missing element from The Education of Ellis. But, no need to worry, the bars haven’t taken a dip at all on the album; the tales of Baltimore City remain vivid. There’s no telling where the latest tweaks in Ellis’ artistry will take him with Ocean Grown, but for now, stream the project above and let us know what you think. If you like what you hear, the album is also available for purchase on iTunes.
Keep up with Ellis for updates on shows and new music here!
