Last Thursday, Penn Social hosted for one intense ass DJ competition. The was presented by Suitelife Radio, and featured eight of the dopest DJ’s from Baltimore, New York, and (of course) the DMV. The areas’ top DJs were also present to judge the competition. 2012 DMC World Champion DJ AS-1 was a judge for the competition, as well as local radio DJ’s like Sixth Sense from 93.9 WKYS and DJ Heat from 95.5. Even with elite judges in the house, the competition was so good that it was a bit hard to decide who can even go to the second round, however, it only made this DJ Battle a hell of a show for the Penn Social crowd that night.
Things didn’t seem so live at first, however. The venue was pretty calm with the house spinner, DJ Fanci, giving us a dope mix to hold us over until the competition started. But once it was time for the contestants to show their stuff, shit got real quickly. The reigning champion from BK, Kerim the DJ, started the battle out with a dope mix of T.I. single “About The Money” featuring Young Thug. From there, contestants like Shante Shree and DJ Trife stepped up playing field with some dope ass mixes.
As the competition went on, it was evident that the competition was fierce, but well balanced. You can see that each contestant had their own style of music that influenced their three-minute mixes. From Old School Hip Hop, to EDM, there wasn’t any discrimination to the sounds, as long as the DJs gave it all they had. The competition also included a performance by DMV rapper Pinky Killacorn, who made the crowd hype during her four songs, especially the ladies.
Even though the competition at the 8-3-1 DJ Battle was fierce, Kerim the DJ still came out the battle as the reigning champion. That is until next year’s contest.
