It’s no surprise that each summer music festivals are experiencing an increase in attendees. Take Firefly Music Festival. Last year, Firefly added an extra day to their summer music gathering. Attendee numbers increased from 65,000 to 80,000 from 2013 to 2014 respectively.
Even Jay-Z decided to expand his Budweiser Made In America Festival to both the East and West coasts. Among the top headliners that no one else could beat: the “Happy” artist, Pharrell and Kanye West. And yes, Kim K could be seen in the audience.
And now it all makes sense…it’s going to be dope when Kendrick ends his performance, “To Pimp A Butterfly” Well then…
With lineups poppin up every day, these are the festivals DMV-ers will be at this year:
Sweetlife Music Festival // May 30-31
We were excited to hear that Sweetgreen, DC’s most prominent salad company, upped its festival standard into a weekend long event. From a small lineup, to this year’s feature of Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd and Calvin Harris, there was almost no debate. You have to go. Then…you saw the prices. It’s probably why it hasn’t sold out yet. But hey, can we get a free salad with our ticket? Hopefully that’s incentive.
Roots Picnic // May 30-31
If you’re only wish is to see The Weeknd, steer yourself to Philadelphia. It might be a bit more of a trek, but other headliners include DJ Mustard, A$AP Rocky, Erykah Badu and Rae Sremmurd. The best part is tickets cost $65. Talk about getting your bang for your buck. Plus Questlove and the Roots are the truth so there’s no reason not to support the big homies.
Governors Ball // June 5-7
Well the city that never sleeps is a bit out of the DMV range, but we’ll be considering possibly copping a day ticket since Drake clearly won’t be any closer this summer. If you’re looking for three days of a variety of rap, hip-hop, pop and edm, look no further. The festival comes completes not only with A-Trak and Logic, but Bjork and Rae Sremmurd will also perform. Our suggestion is to hit the fest for the day and the city for the rest of your stay. We can all run through the city with our woes.
Summer Jam Music Festival // June 7
This year’s Summer Jam will be a smash considering it will feature Travi$ Scott, B.o.B., Joey Bada$$, Dej Loaf, and Teyana Taylor, etc. You can purchase your tickets now here. The NYC event never disappoints as many MC’s in the past including Jigga man himself has even threaten to put other MC’s on blast on the Summer Jam screen.
Firefly Music Festival // June 18-21
If you love a little bit of every kind of music and you’re hoping to cross a Beatles member off your bucket list, this would be the place to do so. The four-day Delaware event not only includes headliner Paul McCartney, but the legendary Snoop Dogg. Did you notice Kid Cudi also just so happened to drop “love?” Sad to say, there will be no day passes this year; so go all in or not at all.
Mad Decent Block Party // July 7-Sept 26
This will be one of the best Block Party’s of the year as the Mad Decent team never disappoints when they put on a show. They have went all out this year with putting together a tour schedule to cover Atlanta, Ft. Lauderdale, Philadelphia, Brookly, Detroit, New Orleans, Dallas, Austin, Nashville, Toronto, Denver, Calgary, Vancouver, Berkeley, Eugene, San Diego, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Be sure to check their sites for your respective chance to catch them when their in town.
Trillectro Festival // August 29
No dates or lineup have been announced but let’s not forget that Big Sean graced us with his presence last year. Also, Vibes in Austin, Texas will feature Taylor Gang…so we have high hopes for DC’s future. Plus Modi, Quinn, Marcel, and the whole Trillectro team always comes with it when putting together a live event. So keep your eyes peeled.
Virgin Mobile’s Free Fest // RIP?
We were all disappointed when the festival didn’t return in 2014, but we still have small hopes for its return this year. Please include a good lineup and discounted festival tickets? Only time will tell.
