I had the opportunity to link up with one of the most hardworking and down to earth, On Air Radio Personalities on 92Q in Baltimore, MD. She’s also a huge contributor to Baltimore’s inner city community in which she uses her Non-Profit as a tool to inspire, mentor, and encourage success to teens through educational workshops. When she’s not On Air you can find her DJing parties and playing the hottest Baltimore Club music at Hot Skates on Saturday for the youth of the city. Not that this is surprising from a Howard University graduate and member of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc.
She’s also notorious for giving away the latest copy of her Get Pumped Mixtape every year, Executive Produced by Mighty Mark. Recently she just released Get Pumped Vol. 3, on January 1st, 2015, which currently has a five star rating on DatPiff.com. She has also been recognized as, The Best Club DJ in Baltimore according to the City Paper this past year. Moreover, AngelBaby is hungrier than ever in pursuing her dreams and aspirations while helping youth discover and positively define themselves along the way.
Having the opportunity to capture her throughout her daily grind was amazing and I have to say it was dope to know she was hosting, Animal House with DJ Porkchop, as he’s apart of ‘Baltimore Club Music Royalty’ with his infamous song produced by KW Griff. When listening to that song I’m always instantly reminded as to why I loved club music so much and the impact it’s had on me as a teen when going to parties back in middle school and high school in Jersey. Back then not many Jersey Club tracks were made so all we had was Baltimore Club or Philly Club music to dance to and have fun with. S/O to for making sure I was able to hear it on Power 99 FM as a kid.
Shortly after AngelBaby reviewed what she was broadcasting for the night and set up her setlist. She enters a studio booth where she warms up and hops on the turntables to do a quick mix to introduce her radio slot for the night. Right away I felt the drive and excitement she had while doing her job to make sure the city of Baltimore enjoyed the show before the initial break for Christmas. Once she got into her groove she began to mix some of the top hits such as , , and adding a holiday twist to the mix. While mixing AngelBaby actively checked her iPhone for Instagram and Twitter mentions from fans to give shoutouts to everyone listening on air.
As the show progressed AngelBaby and DJ Porkchop challenged listeners to give AngelBaby an animal name since she was co-hosting Animal House. “Maybe you can be a Puma, yeah yeah DJ AngelPuma Rap!!!!” making AngelBaby burst with laughter. Within just 10 seconds the phone started ringing off the hook and a listener suggested an Owl in reference to her famous phrase, “Oww Owwww”. Like always AngelBaby showed her fan genuine love and went into the next track.
After she got finish mixing she entered another studio where she began to run the switchboard and record ads. None the less I knew off rip that she makes a conscious effort to outwork everybody in the radio business. As the show went on she began to share her story about putting in work at WPGC 95.5 and having the desire to be On Air. She then finally got her first start as an On Air Personality on terrestrial radio at TV One’s, WYCB Gospel AM station. Now that might not seem like the sexiest route to get on radio but it definitely worked in AngelBaby’s favor tremendously because it allowed her to hone and craft her skills.
As for her work ethic it doesn’t go unnoticed as DJ Porkchop shared, “AngelBaby displays a work ethic probably stronger than most men I’ve seen in this business. You can’t tell me that she’s not grinding.” Co-signed by her involvement with Urban Artemis (with a core mission to help young girls become young respectable women), The Get Pumped movement she’s kicked off that encourages kids to make time for recreation and education, and her dedication to carry the torch and make sure that Baltimore Club Music is heard on the radio in the city. That’s already a lot of work in itself not to mention the work she’s done with co-hosting with Terrence J. Speaking on the work it takes for a female to be great in the music industry DJ AngelBaby shares.
“It takes a women to be 10x better, 10x harder, 10x more aggressive, in this industry than it is for a man.”
Overall, seeing AngelBaby in action is refreshing especially seeing as to how many young people she reaches with her music while still being humble and respectful to her beginnings of getting started in radio. She always shares her thankfulness to those who helped her get started including K-Swift for the inspiration; , DJ Gemini, and James The Great for coaching her on DJing and hosting early on in her career, DJ Porkchop and Squirrel Wyde for showing her the ropes on building her music collection, and Mighty Mark collaborating with her to put together her Get Pumped Mixtapes. If this doesn’t do nothing else it definitely exhibits how she’s beyond grateful for what she has and is not satisfied with instant success. In the future she’ll be working on a new TV show in Baltimore called Charm City TV and could possibly have a few opportunities on TV with BET.
So definitely stay posted on AngelBaby’s next moves as I’m confident they’ll be making positive change not just in Baltimore but the world. Because as the late Smash always says on her tracks, “I seee you babyyyy … AngelBabbbbbbyyyyy”.
