This week’s sample is provided by the sounds of De La Soul and the late J.Dilla. Off of their 1996 album Stakes Is High their title track and first single would be produced by Detroit native James Yancy aka Jay Dee. This song contains a sample from jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal’s Swahililand which was released in 1974. If you listen to Jamal’s version you can hear the sampled part around the 7:30 mark which would later be looped by Dilla. 20 years later De la Soul is still rocking with the release of their 9th album titled and the Anonymous Nobody… To commemorate the milestone Mass Appeal teamed up with the trio and released the documentary De La Soul Is Not Dead. Check it out below as well as the tracks that were discussed.
