On Wednesday, a new wave of sound had hit the 9:30 Club. Many fans were excited to see Goldlink, who headlined the show. The DMV rapper was performing in his hometown, which made the performance a lot more special. Several Goldlink fans were also able to experience four insane sets from the unique music collective, Soulection. The artists behind the collective performing that night included the host of the radio show, Joe Kay, Virginia producer Lakim, Los Angeles producer Esta, and Seattle’s own Sango. Sango even brought out Houston singer SPZRKT for a couple of songs before his highly anticipated mix.
The show was very dope due to an impeccable relationship between both the producers and the crowd. Each producer stood out with their own significant style throughout their sets: Lakim provided a plethora of bangers and Esta would follow up with a mix up of R&B classics for the ladies. I would be wrong not to mention the live ass crowd. DC definitely showed love for each producer during the entire event. The front row went crazy through the different sets to the point where fans were tossed water bottles of appreciation from the artists themselves. The impressive Soulection performance was soon followed by an energized performance by Goldlink. Although his rise to international acclaim has escalated in the past year, Link’s intimate performance showed that he was still loved by the city. He ended the night by bringing out Chaz French for the Falcon-produced”Aquafina,” and also announcing that he would release his next mixtape under Soulection.
Soulection’s and Goldlink’s performances at the 9:30 Club were successful to say the least. Although many members performed at the intimate U Street Music Hall venue last year, the stage was literally bigger at the new location. This performance felt like their first formal introduction in the Diamond District – and we loved every bit of it.
