This has got to be one of the best films to come out in theaters this entire year. In short this comedy romance was one for the record books when it comes to bringing together an all-star cast including Rosario Dawson, J.B. Smoove, Gabrielle Union, Cedric The Entertainer, Jay Pharoah, and more. When going out to check out this film I had no idea what to expect as I purposefully avoided any and all advertising for this film. So I went into it with an open mind and no expectation. Simply put I was able to enjoy this movie from beginning til end. The story to this film is fluffed with a lot of the things people go through day to day. Annoying ass jobs, personal challenges to overcome addictions, separating what’s real and fake, etc. In my opinion that was one of the most epic parts of the film; just the realism that tied to the characters played by Rock and Rosario.
Throughout the film you can find many ongoing jokes including the word “Hammy!!!” being tossed around a thousand times. Kid you not although you might think this would be annoying it was actually quite funny as there’s nothing else to expect from Chris Rock himself other than a super funny ass movie. It was also quite interesting to see that the film was Executive Produced by none other than Jay-Z and Kanye West which was an added bonus. Above all things the scene that got me hyped was seeing the family of Andre Allen played by Rock, go back and forth on who their favorite Top Five MC’s were. Now we all know when folks start announcing their top five mc’s of all time we are all on guard and ready to shut it down and share our list so this scene resonated with me and many of the viewers of this film.
Like most other movies it has that random love story tied in so your likely to have to just deal with it if that’s not your speed. Although it semi feels like a chick flix during that part of the movie it’s not as bad as some films. So don’t be alarmed by that but definitely be ready to bust a gut and laugh harder than you’ve laughed in all of 2014.
I would definitely recommend this movie to any hardcore movie goers that enjoy a great laugh. Beyond that this film is easily a great film to check out over the holidays with your friends during college break or if your just reuniting with some good peoples. Definitely be sure not to take the kiddies with you when viewing this film though as there is a fair share of raunchy scenes in this film. Also, stay posted and tuned to see the special appearance in the film when Rock finds himself in jail it’ll give you something to laugh about indeed. Stay up and keep winning!
