Compton MC, Boogie, stepped on the scene with a smash when he released the Jahlil Beats-produced “Oh My.” Usually when guys pop up with a hit such as Boogie did, it’s pretty easy to hold a “One hit wonder?” sign above the artist’s head. But, there’s no doubt that this guy isn’t going anywhere in the near future; the west coast remains intact with quality music. In this LP, Boogie isn’t giving you gangsta raps over bass-knocking beats, the project’s sound is actually quite the opposite. Much smoother and much lighter samples fill a lot of the production, but who’s really going to complain when a sample is used right? Yup, let’s move on.
Boogie is a man who wants to continue shedding light on his city and help bring change to his neighborhood. His soulful sound separates himself from the pack and his message is clear. Letting go of the past and creating a different energy for himself, his family, and those he may not even know is his narrative. You get the vivid pictures painted in raps from artists like Kendrick Lamar, YG, and Jay Rock, but Boogie has an interesting story that people should give a listen to. If his future work is anything like The Reach, expect this guy to be a solid component to what is the West Coast sound. The potential is mighty high.
