After garnering a lot of attention through beat battles and party gigs across New York and New Jersey, MentPlus is snappin’ necks with his new single “All My Friends.” The addictive instrumental demonstrates that there’s a lot this Brooklyn dweller has up his sleeve, and that includes an EP that will come out in just a few weeks, which will serve as the prequel to a full 20 track instrumental LP.
“All My Friends” shares its sound with some of the greatest to ever do it, a little Dilla in the drums and keyboards, and a touch of DJ Premier in the low-key griminess. But once the track’s 82 seconds of dopeness drift by and you’re hitting the play button again, you realize the sound is solely, MentPlus. And it’s that feeling that makes his upcoming Stormy Nights project that much more anticipated. That only goes double for the lucky few who have stumbled across his gem-filled SoundCloud, a highly recommended follow if we say so.
What I like most about MentPlus production style is that it’s extremely loose and reminds me of what producing was all about when producers took a bunch of records and tried to recreate them into bangers while using a loose and fun flowing style. Some of the greats have been able to maximize off of this including Madlib, J. Dilla, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and more. I’m definitely keeping my eyes out for his Stormy Nights EP that drops September 23, via High Water Music.
