Although he’s as youthful as his music sounds,Troye Sivan made a name for himself in the electro-pop world this week with his release of Blue Neighborhood. After gaining fame through the video megaplex, Youtube, Troye Sivan set his sights on a music career. A few critics have categorized his sound as electro-gloom pop, which honestly is the most fitting description I can think of. Yet, I am going to give Sivan a bit more ownership over his gloominess. He’s only twenty, but man does he know what he’s doing.
His lyrics paint us an image of the suffocating teenage life in suburbia. Then a few of his songs describe the hesitation, pain, and thrill that comes along with young love. It’s the anthem that teens have been searching for, but also is relatable for any person who’s experienced the struggle through young adulthood.
A few of my favorite tracks include “COOL,” “for him.,” and “TALK ME DOWN.” “COOL” tells us the story about late nights, fast cars, and youthful innocence that always seems to encourage us to fit in, instead of being ourselves. It’s slower and darker at first but once the chorus kicks in a jazzy shock runs down your spine. Sivan’s low and sultry voice also surprises your ears at times, especially when he hits airy falsetto notes. Then there’s “for him.,” my favorite track from the album. It features Allday, a rapper from Southern Australia, which adds a different vibe to this track. “for him.” is also much more hopeful than some of the other more nostalgic songs. Finally, there’s “TALK ME DOWN” which depicts the experience of late night emotional ramblings; when your brain won’t allow you to fall asleep and you’re sick to your stomach over something. He mentions his 3AM shadow who won’t let him escape, and how all he yearns for is anyone to comfort him.
I for one was amazed and intrigued by Troye Sivan’s debut album. It’s mature, intimate, and just plain real. There’s no holding back in his lyrics, and any listener can tell that. Every track on the album serves a purpose, and was crafted over a long period of time. The arrangements even capture every intense feeling in the most perfect way. Definitely, give Blue Neighborhood a listen.
