Alright y’all, appreciate you joining us for Day 2 of the Summer Spirit Fest recap. If you missed day 1 check out the recap here. Alright, I’m going to be straight up with y’all. The crowd was clearly much more excited for Day 2; so much so it took us over an hour to find parking.
To kick things off for day 2, Wisdom Speeks got right to work in getting the crowd going and excited for what was to follow. They started jamming right away and put on a show for their fans to remember. Next up was Cross Rhodes, who are two seniors as individuals but still new as a group. The combination of Wes Felton’s lyrics and Raheem Devaughn sultry vocals was awesome. I can only look forward to their continued growth as a group since they were extremely polished to have just joined forces as a band.
Kindred the Family made sure to share nothing but love with the Merriweather Post Pavilion as they rocked the crowd. As always you can only expect good things from this great husband and wife duo. They did a great job getting everyone feeling good. Next up was the Chuck Brown band.
The Chuck Brown band was definitely continuing the legacy of the late great go-go legend! They broke out several of his classics including Wind Me Up Chuck, Woody Wood Pecker, Bustin Loose, and Chuck Baby. The Chuck Brown band had the crowd more excited and into the show than any other performer the whole night.
There was a surprise addition to the performance list with Georgia Me. It was definitely a tough position to be in because the crowd was pretty antsy and ready for her to get off the stage the minute she stepped up there. She was after all, standing in the way of the audience hearing the internationally known Jilly from Philly. Georgia’s poems were sprinkled with comedy and love for black men. She was the perfect opening act for Jill who spent many days as a young poet filling books with rhymes to perform before Philly crowds. As Georgia wrapped up, the crowd rose to their feet in preparation for Jill.
Jill Scott entered the stage with the aura of a fairy godmother. Her blouse blowing in the wind and glowing with joy, she thanked the crowd for coming out. Jill treated the audience to a mix of songs old and new with varied renditions to spice up their sound and introduce a new flare to the familiar taste that fans had come to love. My favorite part of the performance was when she pulled the crowd into a call and response session to say “I will love myself a little bit more than the day before.”Jill has a rare ability to transition from encouragement to sensuality and then comedy with ease. As the night sky grew darker, Jill dug deeper into her crates taking fans along a journey through her crates. Like the night before with Erykah, Sunday was nothing short of magical.
We would like to offer a huge thank you to CDE Presents for letting us attend the 2016 Summer Spirit Festival. It was an amazing event filled with awesome performances. Well done!
