Chicago rapper Vic Mensa has blessed us with his latest EP There’s Alot Going On and has fans buzzing all over. This project is the followup to his 2013 mixtape Innanetape that garnered much success and would land him a deal with Roc Nation. Since 2013 the 22 year old has had his fair share of trails and tribulations that he’s dealt with and is finally ready to share them with the world in the form of music. We’ve all seen how ugly the music industry can be at times as it turns eager musicians into something we wouldn’t imagine. From depression to drug/alcohol abuse and in some cases suicide, artist can really become engulfed in the lifestyle to the point they ask, “is this even worth it?”. Luckily for us Vic Mensa has defeated his demons and is hopeful his story can serve as a guide on how not to go down the once dark path he traveled.
The title track There’s Alot Going On serves as a tell all book post record deal going into detail about things the average fan was unaware of including a slight drug addiction he would eventually overcome. Taking place in a gun range, a shirtless Vic raps in chronological order key moments in his life and as each topic comes up a target sheet rolls by giving a literal visual about who he’s rapping about. From Kanye to Jay Z to even his ex-girlfriend everyone was a target, no pun intended. This no holds bars song seems to me that this is his redemption song, a last look at the past before the next chapter begins. As a fan you have to love how honest some artist can be and not being afraid to speak on things that aren’t so good in their lives, gives them a form of humility. His debut album is set to release no later then Christmas so until then make sure you check out his latest EP which is free until July 4th if you register to vote. Looks like Vic plans to bring change not only within himself, but within his community as well.
