It doesn’t matter for how long an artist from TDE remains mum on new music, when it drops, people are going to flock to it. With a roster filled with talent, it does become interesting when an artist has to wait his or her turn to bat. So far in 2016, we’ve seen a release from Isaiah Rashad (“Smile“) and Kendrick Lamar’s well-received untitled unmastered LP, which leaves fans to one simple question: Who’s up next? But, of course, that question has been answered and fans are pleased as today’s topic is none other than ScHoolboy Q. While folks on social media were hoping for a new project, I figured a single would be the gift from Top Dawg. I was right, and yes, I want my award. Ha!
Now, let’s get into the music. ScHoolboy Q has been quiet about the follow up to his debut album Oxymoron, which isn’t surprising for any TDE artist but, luckily, fans are pretty patient with them. As the plot seems to thicken for the label, whom is sure to attack 2016 in a major way, has kept people wanting more with fifteen second Instagram videos were used as teasers for upcoming visuals — including ScHoolboy Q’s “Groovy Tony.” For what it’s worth, TDE’s CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith has been feeling quite generous this year. Lebron James asked if Top Dawg could release Kendrick Lamar’s untitled tracks we all drooled over from his live television performances, we ended up with untitled unmastered. Last night, a random fan asked Top to drop something new from the label, and now here we are. Oh, and the wait was beyond worth it.
“Groovy Tony” is another example as to why ScHoolboy Q is respected as an artist. The track is full of exciting lyrics and Q’s gritty flows is the icing on the cake. Between rapping about his gang banging lifestyle, a few “flex” bars and touching on social injustice on the hook, ScHoolboy Q completely murders this record. and But before we could even digest the single by itself, he also released an accompanying link to the video as well. And believe me when I say it’s insanely good. Hopefully this isn’t just a tease, but a step in the right direction for Q’s sophomore release to see the light of day. I guess we’ll all have to remain patient — as we usually do with TDE. In the mean time, enjoy “Groovy Tony” above.
I think we’re now in Q season.
