Last night in Las Vegas, the 38 year old Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. improved his dominance to an astounding 47-0 while leaving the right column unmarked by defeating Marcos Maidana for the second time this year.
The fight was scored due to there being no knockouts. One judge scored it 115-112 and the other two judges scored it 116-111 all for Mayweather. But the number that is perhaps the most intriguing wasn’t the scored card or his total number of wins. The number I find most intriguing is $32 million. Yup, that’s how much Mayweather is rumored to have earned in last nights bout. $32 million dollars for 12 rounds of boxing is estimated at a little over $14k a second. Clearly, Mayweather’s Money Team is rolling in the dough in sin city.
Although he graded himself a C- after last nights performance, Mayweather continues to establish and affirm his dominance and worth to the sport of boxing. Although, I’m sure we all would rather a heavy weight talent be the face of the sport ( ie. Lenox, Tyson, Holyfield), but those days are past us and the 146 pound Money Mayweather is today’s Muhammad Ali.
What’s next? Where does Mayweather go from here? Will Manny Pacquio ever accept the challenge? Probably not. As he fights the opponents he’s given, it becomes more and more convincing to me that there is no competition for him and that this can go on as long as Mayweather allows it to.
